Huntsville one step closer to landing the Dream Chaser

Phase II contract signed to land Dream Chaser at Huntsville International

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Besides the cool factor, Monday's announcement that Huntsville International is one step closer to becoming a landing destination for the Dream Chaser is huge news for the Rocket City.

If approved by the FAA, this would bring an economic boost and would make Huntsville International a first of its kind.

What better place to become the first commercial airport to land a Space Craft than Huntsville International?

A recent contract agreement moves this dream closer to reality.

It allows the airport to apply for licensing through the FAA.

"It is really great and makes me happy to hear, because I love Huntsville's space heritage," said Zachary Stewart.

The contract is part of Phase II, which is a 24-month long project.

Right now the Dream Chaser is taking cargo to and from the International Space Station.

That cargo includes experiments.

With the Dream Chaser that means runway landing with immediate access to cargo, cutting down on the time it takes to deliver those experiments to laboratories.

"Really, it just makes me more proud of the area," said Stewart.

Landing the Dream Chaser would play a huge role in Huntsville leading the way in the Commercial Space Industry.

It would also make the city a magnet to commercial space companies that would have immediate access to their products coming from the ISS.

That means brining in more jobs and revenue to the area.

"I have two girls in high school, they would really enjoy something like that," said Stacey Painter.

The Dream Chaser would also be a tourism boost for people interested in seeing its takeoff and landing, similar to what the Space Shuttle program saw.

There are current initiatives underway seeking ideas for utilizing the Dream Chaser beyond cargo transport.
