Huntsville City Schools releases new Behavioral Learning Guides

This guide changes the way teachers discipline students

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - Huntsville City Schools is changing the way teachers discipline students.

The district revised its Behavioral Learning Guides for the new school year based on feedback from teachers, students and parents.

As the legal guardian to an 11th grader in Huntsville City Schools, Maria Vera says she's heard about incidents of students misbehaving, like kids making fun of children who don't speak a lot of English.

Huntsville City Schools have given teachers an updated rule book to help them discipline students during these types of misconduct.

The revised Behavioral Learning Guide has instructions on disciplinary procedures.

Keith Ward, spokesperson for Huntsville City Schools, says, "There are much stiffer consequences for things that are drug usage type offenses and there are also more guidance on students that have a tendency to stay in school or stay in class.

"It gives the student a chance to take responsibility and it’s creating an environment where the likelihood of the student repeating the offense could go down."

Disciplinary actions include shorter expulsion lengths and restorative panel meetings with students and their families.

Parents say discipline shouldn't only happen inside the classroom.

Vera says, "Maybe in the hallways, just to have more like people watching for those kinds of misbehaviors."

HCS says studies show that a progressive disciplinary system leads to a safe learning environment.

The new Behavioral Learning Guides are available here.
