Gas line break temporarily shuts down US 31 in Tanner

TANNER, Ala. - UPDATE - 10:59a.m. Gas line struck by contractor in Tanner Crossroads area has been shut off and all roads are open.

This morning at 9:34 a.m. a contractor struck a 6-inch line owned by American Midstream.

Athens Gas Department Manager said crews had to let the line blow down in order to shut it off.

Repairs are underway. 

 

Athens is working to transfer part of the load because the line is one of two that feeds Athens.

UPDATE - 10:48a.m. Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said the struck gas line in the Tanner Crossroads area is not burning but is free flowing. Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road east of U.S. 31 is closed. A contractor struck a 6-inch line owned by American Midstream.

Athens Fire and Rescue Chief Bryan Thornton said a contractor has struck a 6-inch gas line owned by American MIdstream. Homes in the area of Pitts Boulevard and U.S. 31 were evacuated.

Access to the Tanner Crossroads area at U.S. 31 and Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road was blocked. Both north and south bound lanes of U.S. 31 and east and west lanes of Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road were closed.

Tanner Crossroads was re-opened moments ago after updated gas levels were taken. However, officials still ask that you avoid the area.
