Florence Police K9 attacks 60-year-old woman

Police dog escapes, attacks elderly woman

FLORENCE, Ala. - A 60-year-old woman is recovering after being attacked over the weekend by a Florence police K-9.
 
The incident happened in the 2100 block of Briarcliff Dr.
 
Police say the dog escaped a fenced enclosure where it was lived with its caretaker, a Florence Police Officer.
 
An investigation is underway to determine how the dog escaped and why it attacked the woman.
 
Police are also reviewing its policy.

"Any discrepancies in our policy or anything that may help us in the future to prevent such a situation," said Sgt. Wed Gargis.

The dog has been removed from duty pending the department's investigation.

We are told the victim has undergone at least two surgeries.
 
There's no word on her condition.
