Florence begins Sunday alcohol sales

Officials believe Sunday alcohol sales will boost overall sales for retailers

Another North Alabama city is allowing businesses to sell alcohol on Sundays, thanks to a new alcohol ordinance in Florence.

The city is one of the latest to allow businesses to sell alcohol on Sundays.

The City Council approved Sunday alcohol sales to begin the first of this month.

Katrina Simmons, City Council District 1, says, "We've received many calls from our retailers and grocery stores wanting us to consider Sunday sales, and so we did take that into consideration. To remain competitive, we decided to move forward with it."

Now alcohol retailers, including grocery and liquor stores, are able to sell adult beverages on Sundays.
Officials believe Sunday alcohol sales will boost overall sales for retailers, thinking that if people visit a store to buy an adult beverage, they will pick up other things as well.

Dandy’s Discount Package has been selling alcohol for the past two Sundays and say a lot of people are not even aware of the change to the ordinance.

Cassi West, a cashier at Dandy's, says, “[We are] sharing on social media and our marquee, and also have it labeled on every day we have a radio ad."

Retailers believe being able to do business on Sunday will also enhance local tourism, with the music, river, and country events being some of the reasons people may want to continue drinking throughout Sunday."

Sunday alcohol sales are allowed from 12noon to 2:00am.
