Escaped convict calls news station

Inmate on the run calls tv station to claim innocence

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - If you escaped jail, and you're on the run, would you really call the news?

That's what an escape inmate did in Birmingham.

Antwone Wilson escaped from St. Clair Correctional Facility.

He called WBRC and told them he broke out of prison because he is innocent.

Wilson was locked up with a life sentence for robbery.

Antwone Wilson said, "I hate to say this but I'd rather be on the run, I'd rather be on the run and enjoy my life, looking over my shoulder, than being in prison for the rest of my life for a crime I didn't commit."

During the 15 minute phone call with the station, Wilson wouldn't tell reporters how he escaped.

The television station immediately called police.

They haven't Wilson yet, and consider him dangerous.
