Student found with broken weapon with missing chamber on campus

Highlands Elementary was placed on Secure Perimeter Thursday morning while law enforcement investigated a weapons threat.

According to Huntsville City Schools Director of Communications Keith Ward, safety procedures require the district to treat all threats as if they are serious.

The investigation revealed that a student had brought, "...a broken weapon with a missing chamber in his backpack." According to Ward, the student will receive consequences as outlined in district guidelines.

Huntsville Police confirm that the student was arrested for bringing a firearm to school.

Huntsville City Schools Security and Huntsville Police cleared the facility, and the school has returned to its normal classroom schedule.
