Amazon is an e-commerce company that does billions of dollars in sales. Here's a look at some of the companies it's purchased, and products and services it offers.
Jeff Bezos founded the company on July 5, 1994. The company is based in Seattle, Washington.
The Amazon Key service launched Nov. 8 for Prime members. A special lock that allows delivery people inside of your home to drop off orders safely costs $249.99, but installation of the device is free.
In 2005 Amazon announced Prime, a subscription-based service that offers free two-day shipping, access to Amazon Video, Prime Music, Prime Pantry, Prime Now and other services.
Home grocery delivery service, AmazonFresh, debuted in 2007.
The Amazon Kindle e-reader was introduced in 2007.
Amazon announced the purchase of Audible in 2008 for about $300 million. Audible sells digital audiobooks, radio and TV programs.
Online shoe and clothing retailer Zappos was purchased in 2009 in an all-stock deal worth about $1.2 billion.
AmazonBasics was launched in 2009 and features private-label consumer electronics and home and office products.
Woot.com was acquired be Amazon in 2010.
Amazon entered the tablet market in 2011 with the Kindle Fire.
Twitch is a subsidiary of Amazon that is a live streaming video platform. Twitch calls itself the world's leading video platform and community for gamers. Amazon acquired Twitch in 2014.
In April 2014, the Amazon Fire TV was introduced. The set-top box allows for video streaming to TV sets.
In 2014, the Amazon Fire Phone was introduced, but was discontinued about a year later due to poor sales.
The Dash Button was introduced in 2015. Pressing the button allows customers to order the product.
The Amazon Echo smart speaker was released in June, 2015. The Echo allows users to have a personal assistant service called Alexa.
Less than a year after the Echo debuted, Amazon introduced the Echo Dot. The Echo Dot is smaller, but has the same functions as full-size Echo.
On June 16, 2017, Amazon announced it would purchase Whole Foods Market for $13.7 billion.
Amazon on Aug. 23, 2017, announced a new tool for teachers that helps design a writing curriculum for elementary students. Amazon acquired TenMarks, an online education company focused on math, in 2013.
