Barrels of Love Food Drive kicks off Wednesday

Local businesses are encouraged to pick up barrels to collect donations

Barrels (and boxes) of Love, Morgan County’s annual non-perishable food drive, kicks off this Wednesday, Feb. 14th from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Ingalls’s Harbor Pavilion.

Barrels will be available for local businesses to pick up so that they can be collection points in the community.

“We encourage local businesses to stop by and pick up a barrel or two,” said 2018 Chairman Bill Francois, complex general manager of International Paper in Decatur. “Over the next two weeks, have your customers and employees fill up those barrels with non-perishable food items and then bring them back in March 2nd.”

Items collected help stock the shelves at the Salvation Army, Committee of Church Cooperation, and backpack feeding programs for Decatur City and Morgan County Schools.

Suggested items include any type of canned or non-perishable food like peanut butter, ramen noodles and granola bars, individually packaged meals and juices (no glass containers) and items with pop-tops that are easy for children to open and use.

Collection Day is March 2nd at Ingall's Harbor.

“This event has grown each year,” said Francois. “Last year we raised about 63,000 items and this year we want to top 75,000.”
