Athens Art Students revitalizing downtown studio space

ATHENS, Ala. - The Athens Arts League received over $4,000 through grants and sponsorships to provide studio space to operate High Cotton Arts. High Cotton Arts is a non-profit organization supporting art opportunities through Limestone County.

Athens Rotary provided a grant that will fund rental cost for a year for Limestone County, Athens City, Athens Bible, and Lindsey Lane to exhibit and sell student art, host a public art show, and allow students to create in a studio setting.

Athens Arts League Chairwoman Amy Golden states that "this will give students the opportunity to share their creations in a professional art facility and work alongside and learn from out resident artists at High Cotton."

Amanda Gudmundsson, director of Fine Arts at Athens City Schools, has been collaborating with Athens Arts League since the Spring. A study showed that students that have more opportunities to arts education performed better on standardized tests, according to Gudmundsson.

Athens State University students also have their own studio at High Cotton Arts where student artwork is on display and available for purchase.

High Cotton Arts is located at 103 W. Washington Street in Downtown Athens and their Facebook page can be found by clicking here
