Annual Juneteenth cookout tradition begins in North Huntsville

Huntsville business starts an annual Juneteenth cookout celebration

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - A summer time cookout is putting a new spin on Huntsville tradition.

"We wanted something where everyone could come out and celebrate and have a good time during the summer; bring their kid," said organizer Teneshia Laroda.

The first annual Juneteenth cookout in north Huntsville is honoring history while celebrating community. Attendee Maya Bryant said she came out, “just to support the Black community, I think stuff like this is great, free stuff and stuff that can bring the community together is just awesome."

Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery. "It has grown over the years to be a celebration of love, freedom, liberty and the American dream, so that's what we wanted to continue here today," said Laroda.

Others who attended the Juneteenth cookout said it's a way to acknowledge how far African Americans have come.

"We are a free people now but slavery did so much to us it's still taken us some years to advance as a people,” said Tenaja Ali.

The family event included free food, music and games all in hopes of driving home one message.

"To celebrate the idea that no matter what we see on the news, what's going on in the world, we are free and we are free to celebrate and that's a wonderful thing," said Laroda.
