Jennifer Rigney of Whitesburg P-8 Named The Valley's Top Teacher

Congrats to the second grade teacher!

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - This week's top teacher says she knew in elementary school that she wanted to be a teacher when she grew up. The elementary teacher says her third grade teacher made learning so exciting, that she vowed to do the same for her future students.

"I always want to make it fun and enjoyable for the kids," said Jennifer Rigney, The Valley's Top Teacher. "I don't want to make it boring, so I want to be that fun, exciting teacher."

That's exactly the feel of Mrs. Rigney's classroom. When you walk inside, you'll see second graders playing games, interacting at learning stations and working on hands-on projects.

"Our teacher is funny," said student, Landon Gallagher. "She jokes sometimes and gives us extra recess."

"She lets us do a lot games," said another student, Demeliran Johnson. "We don't have any homework on Friday's."

Students say they love learning thanks to Mrs. Rigney and her creative curriculum.

"Mrs. Rigney is a really great teacher," said student, A'mia Abrams. "I love her. We can help her. I love helping her and stuff."

"She always helps us when we need help," said student, Katie Williams.

The Valley's Top Teacher also helps her students by teaching them life lessons, such as caring for and sharing with others, and being kind to everyone.

"We talk about respect every day and how we treat each other and manners... all of that," said Mrs. Rigney.

Mrs. Rigney says she strives to implement a positive energy into her classroom and remind her students that they can make school a happy place.

"(I tell them to) make the best of the day -- make it better," said Mrs. Rigney. "Sometimes they're down or they're upset if they got in trouble. I always say 'turn it around -- make it better.'"
