Back-to-school Sales tax holiday in Tennessee July 30-August 1

Sales tax holidays are coming up in Tennessee for school supplies, food, and more.

FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. — Needs to bring down your back-to-school bill? A pair of sales tax holidays are coming up in TN. You don't have to live in Tennessee to take advantage of the savings.

From Friday, July 30 through Sunday, August 1, 2021, clothing, school supplies, and computers are sales-tax free. This includes:

  • Clothing priced under $100
  • School supplies priced under $100
  • Computers priced under $1500
  • Online purchases are included.
  • Get the full list of eligible items here.
  • Some of the things not included?  Jewelry, handbags, and sports and recreational equipment.
  • Also not included: storage media, like flash drives and compact discs, individually purchased software, and printer supplies

From Friday, July 30 through Thursday, August 5, food, food ingredients, and prepared food are exempt from sales tax. This includes:

  • Food and prepared food at grocery stores, restaurants, and food trucks.
  • Takeout food is included in the holiday; however, alcoholic beverages are not included.
  • Get the full list of eligible items here.
  • Some of the items not included? Alcoholic beverages, tobacco, candy, dietary supplements.

The last sales tax holiday is already underway. Gun safes and safety equipment sold at retailers are exempt from sales tax from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022 

“We are proud to return money to hardworking Tennesseans,” Gov. Bill Lee said. “I encourage everyone to take advantage of these savings.” “We’re happy to help Tennesseans save money and provide some tax relief,” Revenue Commissioner David Gerregano said.
