Fatalities, damage reported after strong storms hit Alabama

Communities in Shelby and Calhoun counties sustained heavy damage after tornados tore across central Alabama.

PELHAM, Ala. — Severe weather moving through Alabama on March 25 left a path of destruction and multiple fatalities.

Tornadoes moving through Alabama demolished homes near Birmingham and left thousands without power. In the Eagle Point subdivision of Shelby County,  at least one house was reduced to rubble while roofs and second stories were missing from others. Authorities in the city of Pelham are reporting heavy damage as well. 

Calhoun County Sheriff Matt Wade reported at least five dead after tornadoes devastated the town of Ohatchee.

The City of Pelham, AL is under a curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. after a tornado damaged parts of the city. Pelham Police estimate that between 30 and 50 structures were damaged, with assessment still underway.

The Eagle Point subdivision near Birmingham also sustained heavy damage.

Emergency workers braced for more storms Thursday while trying to account for all residents in the affected areas. Storm warnings are in effect from eastern Mississippi, across Alabama and into western Georgia.

In north Alabama, DeKalb County EMA reports that all roads in Fort Payne are impassable due to flooding.

Minor flooding was seen in Athens and Decatur, AL. More rain is expected with Flash Flood warnings in place across much of the Tennessee Valley.

In Florence, AL, a police officer was struck by lightning while putting up barricades in a flooded area. Florence deputy police chief Mike Holt said that the officer is being held for observation but is in good spirits and seems to be doing well.
