ADOC to expand COVID-19 testing to some inmates, staff

Four staff members and 69 inmates at North Alabama Community-Based Facility/Community Work Center in Decatur tested positive for COVID-19

DECATUR, Ala — The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) is expanding its COVID-19 testing in its staff and inmate populations.

ADOC said it is in the process of providing tests to its staff and contracted healthcare staff. The department said it is also testing inmates in facilities that house large numbers of medically vulnerable inmates.

The testing process has been completed and results have been collected for the following facilities:

  • Fountain Correctional Facility staff in Altmore, Alabama.
  • Loxley Community-Based Facility/Community Work Center staff and inmates in Loxley, Alabama.
  • North Alabama Community-Based Facility/Community Work Center staff and inmates in Decatur, Alabama.
  • Kilby Correctional Facility staff and inmates in Montgomery, Alabama.

Of the 80 staff members who voluntarily participated in the process, five new positive cases were identified. One staff member at Loxley Community-Based Facility/Community Work Center and four staff members at North Alabama Community-Based Facility/Community Work Center tested positive.

Of the 1,144 inmates who voluntarily participated in the process, 163 new positive cases were identified. 94 inmates at Loxley Community-Based Facility/Community Work Center and 69 inmates at North Alabama Community-Based Facility/Community Work Center tested positive.
